Louis Anthony Nix III was born on July 31, 1991 in Jacksonville, Florida to father Louis Nix Sr. and mother Stephanie Wingfield. He passed away on February 27, 2021 in Jacksonville. He was 29.
Louis graduated from Raines High School in 2010 where he enjoyed playing basketball, but it was Vikings football and playing for coach Deran Wiley where he excelled. Dozens of colleges recruited the high school All-American and he chose the University of Notre Dame. Louis anchored a powerful defensive line for the Fighting Irish and helped lead the program to an undefeated regular season and appearance in the BCS National Championship Game in 2012. Louis graduated with a degree in Film, Television, and Theatre in 2014. The Houston Texans selected Louis in the third round of the NFL Draft that spring. He also spent time as a member of NFL teams in New York, Washington and Jacksonville.
A lifelong Floridian, leaving Jacksonville for South Bend, Indiana was a big change, but Lou made friends easily and became a favorite among fans. Lou was bigger than life. People were drawn to him. Lou embraced what it meant to be a Notre Dame student-athlete and understood the importance of service. His generous spirit and willingness to lend a hand meant that Lou said yes to countless autographs and photo requests, dorm move-ins, and even playing Santa Claus during an auction to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life at Notre Dame. He cherished his nicknames "Big Lou" and "Irish Chocolate."
Louis was preceded in death by grandmother Mary Ann White and brother Louis Nix Jr.
Left to mourn his passing are his parents Louis Nix Sr. and Stephanie (Ken) Wingfield; brothers Antonio, Steven, Cameron, and Andre Nix, Kenneth, Timothy, Joshua, and Matthew Ancrum; sisters Antonnette, Andrea, Jeseka Nix and Kendra Ancrum; grandfather Hampy Ancrum; aunts Dorothy Mae Moody, Patrice Wingfield, Kim Wingfield, Cheryl (Gary) White-Williams, and Janice Ancrum; Uncle Larry Wingfield and many great aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, teammates, and friends.
