Dr. Evelyn Boyd Young, retired educator with more than 33 years of dedicated service to the Duval County Public School System, passed away Friday, October 8, 2021, peacefully at home after an extended illness. She was born July 14, 1935, to Fred and Alice Boyd and was a native of Harleyville, South Carolina. She attended the local public schools and graduated from Roberts High School, Class of 1953 in Holly Hill, South Carolina. She was joined in holy matrimony to Robert Lee Young, Sr. and to this union was born Cheryl Kim, Robert Lee and Chenesia LaRose. Dr. Young obtained her bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Edward Waters College now known as Edward Waters University, Jacksonville, Florida; Master of Science in Education from Florida A & M University, Tallahassee, Florida, and PH.D., in Administration, Supervision and Curriculum from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida in 1979. She volunteered for numerous programs in the Jacksonville area to include Leadership JAX, Dignity You Wear and served on the Board of Directors for Vision is Priceless. She was also a member of the Jacksonville Links, Inc. and lifelong member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Jacksonville Alumnae Chapter. After retirement, she worked with the University of North Florida mentoring new teachers for the public school system. For several years, she was a member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church but later became a resolute member of Bethel Baptist Institutional Church where she served faithfully on several boards including her service as an original contributing founder of the B.E.S.T. Academy and member of the Deacon Board where she was later designated Deacon Emeritus. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Young, Sr.; and her eldest daughter, Cheryl Kim Young. In addition to her surviving children, she leaves to mourn her loss, daughter-in-law, Bennita Weston Young; sister, Delores B. Young; brother, Charles W. Boyd and devoted brother-in-law, Johnnie L. Young. She was affectionately called "BaMa" by her four grandchildren, Sara A. Young, Michael A. Brock, Chelsea M. Brock, and Patric C. Young. She also leaves to cherish her memory her forever friend and "Buddy," Ms. Arlene Reed of more than 50 years. She is survived by several nieces and nephews in the Jacksonville community. FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at Bethel Baptist Institutional Church on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at 12noon, with Bishop Rudolph McKissick, Sr. presiding. Dr. Young will be laid to rest in the Jacksonville National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 18, 2021 from 4:00-7:00pm at the mortuary.
